Waste prevention and recycling can result in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Spartanburg County recycled 56,909 tons of MSW resulting in an environmental impact equivalent to: eliminating electricity usage by 47,229 households for one year; 2,487 acres of forest preserved from deforestation; or conserving 40,474,966 gallons of gasoline.
The environmental equivalencies are based on conversion factors available through the WAste Reduction Model (WARM) developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This on-line calculator is available by clicking here.
